I used to love Halloween. My birthday is just two days later, so it was the easiest birthday party for my mom to handle. Send the kids out trick or treating, then come back for cake and ice cream. We lived in a very small town, and it was a very long time ago, so the parents didn’t even need to accompany us. It was every kid’s delight—dress up, run around with friends, and come home with a bag of candy.
Many years later, when our son was little, we’d dress him up as something non-scary—a cowboy or Robin Hood and walk our little neighborhood. By then, I had become a Christian and had mixed feelings about Halloween, but memories from my own childhood motivated me to give him the same delight.
Halloween is an Occult High Holy Day
Then I started doing ministry with women who had been profoundly abused in the occult. Halloween is the High Holy Day within Satanism, witchcraft, and other occult groups. It’s the equivalent of our Good Friday and Easter, complete with blood sacrifice.
Yes, according to the women I worked with, animal and child sacrifices do occur in some of those groups. Especially at Halloween. So Halloween and all its accouterments became a huge trigger for these women. It would send them into a panic attack or worse. Most harmful was when churches, which were supposed to be safe havens, sponsored a “harvest festival” with Halloween decorations. To these women, it was a huge disconnect. More than once, I sat with them as they experienced meltdowns that lasted for hours. The entire Halloween season was one big trigger for these women.
It became clear in living color that Halloween is Satan’s holiday–something that Christians should have nothing to do with. For a Christian to celebrate Halloween makes as much sense as for a person in the occult to celebrate Easter.
Halloween is Used for Occult Recruitment
Yes, it’s sad the kids don’t get to go out and enjoy the fun part of the holiday. Still, we need to be very careful because celebrating Halloween desensitizes young children to the occult aspects of the day and makes them prime targets for recruitment as they get older. There are many reports of teens being lured into the occult during the Halloween season as they keep looking for greater thrills.
If you’d like to know more about Halloween, its origins and reasons for Christians to walk away, I’d invite you to read my book, “Let’s Take Another Look at Halloween.”
