Practical Theology for Victorious Kingdom Living

DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Are you reaping a lot more weeds than fruit in your life?

Are you working hard and seeing little or nothing for it?

It may all be because of your attitude and what comes out of your mouth.

You see, we are created in the image and likeness of our Creator God, who spoke the universe into being. He demonstrated that words actually have the creative power to create substance in both the natural and the spiritual world.

We think our words have no power. That they are just ways of expressing our frustration. But the truth is, in the spirit world, our words create substance. Like, visible, tangible substance. Like, a universe. We don’t see that substance, but the spirit world does. And the spirit world, both angels and demons, go to work to manifest that substance from their realm to ours.

When we spew out hatred and anger, the demons go about orchestrating death and destruction. It may manifest in depression, illness, or actual murder. When we speak faith, hope, love, graciousness, and gratitude, the angels put blessings and prosperity in our path.

Either way, it’s substance. It’s real.

So every time something negative comes out of your mouth, imagine a big pile you’d rather not step on, right at your feet. The more that comes out of your mouth, the bigger the pile gets. Pretty soon, it’s huge and smelly. And you repeat that every day….

Or imagine that every time goodness and grace come out of your mouth, it creates a path to more delight. More good fruit. It’s pleasant and offers a beautiful fragrance around you.

Which do you prefer?

Can you see that wishing for better and speaking worse is counter-productive? You’ll never get what you desire talking smack.

What to do instead?

Speak goodness, blessing, favor, and gratitude.

Develop the habit of being grateful for everything.

I spend my day thanking God for every little thing (and for the big things).

Thank you for the hot and cold running water for my morning shower.
Thank you for flush toilets
Thank you for shampoo and soap and hair dryers and gel.
Thank you for coffee, for food for breakfast, and for choices.
Thank you for my job that I can go to every day (even if it’s just in another room).
Thank you for the green lights. (Thank you for the red lights that give me a chance to breathe and pray).
Thank you for the parking place. (If close, for the convenience; if distant, for the exercise and my ability to walk without
pain).

You get the idea. Every breath you take contains a reason for gratitude and praise. And when spoken out loud, it creates a beautiful garden of substance that makes my day better. Gratitude and praise draw God to you, rather than away from you.

Psalms 22:3 says, “But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel” (NKJV). The Hebrew word for enthroned is yashav, which means to sit, dwell, or inhabit. God really likes praise and gratitude. It causes him to come closer.

If you feel far from God, consider that He doesn’t like the stench of your grumbling and complaining. It causes him to retreat. But He loves the fragrance of praise and gratitude. When he’s invited in through worship and thankful words, He draws near. And helps you clean up the mess.

How about this Thanksgiving, we DECIDE to clean up our attitudes and mouths, and plant a beautiful garden of gratitude. We’ll all like the neighborhood a lot better.
