Sometimes, our giant feels like an elephant.
Huge. Overwhelming. Dangerous. Noisy. Smelly. Scary.
If it were smaller, we could tackle it. Conquer it. Succeed.
But an elephant? Where do you start? How do you get a handle on it? You look at it from the front, and you see one thing. But you turn your head, and it looks different from the side. The leg is taller than you. And the tusk…don’t even get close.
Nope. It’s easy to pretend it isn’t there. To mentally bury it. To distract ourselves with something else. Anything else!
And so it remains. The elephant in the room, taking up a lot more physical and emotional space than it should.
How Do You Eat an Elephant?
I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
That’s our approach with Conquering Your Giants: Biblical Strategies to Conquer What’s Been Conquering You. Giants are too big to conquer in one fell swoop. You know that. You’ve tried, and so have I. So we cower in defeat. Blaming God. Blaming ourselves. Blaming anyone who gets in the way.
But giants can be conquered little by little. One bite at a time. Each lesson is another bite. Maybe a couple of bites. But it isn’t overwhelming. You don’t have to do it in one sitting. Nor should you. Let it sit. Soak in your victories.
As we follow the path of Joshua in his conquest to conquer the giants of the Promised Land, we learn techniques and strategies. As we implement these, one by one, it’s like eating an elephant, one bite at a time.
